Phillipines battered over Christmas by Typhoon Nock-ten

Typhoon Nock-ten which has been roaring through the Philippines over Christmas, has begun to lose intensity.

It had been packing sustained winds of up to 185 kilometres per hour and gusts of more than 250 kilometres per hour. More than 300,000 people had to spend Christmas in shelters after authorities moved them to higher ground.

But by early Monday it had slowed to a speed of under 20 kilometres per hour. Emergency crews have begun to clear the debris, power is being restored and transport services are resuming.

Storm warnings remain in place as the typhoon, which led to two confirmed deaths, continues to subside.

The weakened storm is expected to move towards southern Vietnam over the next couple of days.
