A Libyan passenger jet with 118 people on board has reportedly been hijacked and diverted to Malta.

The state-owned Afriqiyah Airways plane was flying from Sebha in the southwest of Libya to Tripoli.

Local media in Malta reported that two hijackers had threatened to blow up the Airbus A320.

Malta’s Prime Minister Joseph Muscat tweeted: ‘‘Informed of potential hijack situation of a #Libya internal flight diverted to #Malta. Security and emergency operations standing by – JM”

The tiny Mediterranean island of Malta is about 500 km north of the Libyan coast.
