The German president has visited some of those injured in the Berlin market attack who are now recovering.

Around ten people are being cared for at the Charité hospital in the capital.

Joachim Gauck, whose role is largely symbolic, spent time with two of those injured who were due to have operations.

Twelve people were killed when a lorry was driven into a crowd of people at a Christmas market on Monday night. Another 48 were injured, 18 of them seriously.

After his visit the president spoke to reporters, surrounded by hospital staff.

“This attack is also an assault on our way of life. We are responding to this by being helpful, by remaining close to one another, by taking care of others. I am grateful to these people around me, and especially for their enormous efforts. They do an overwhelmingly good job by helping those people, who desperately need our help now.”

On Tuesday the president released a statement expressing compassion for the wounded and the victims’ relatives.
