Clinton Surprisingly Lost More Electoral Votes Than Trump

The Electoral College has voted, and Donald Trump has been confirmed the winner; despite threats of numerous Republican defectors, Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton actually ended up losing more electors than Trump.

The Electoral College convened on Monday to formally select the next U.S. president, and though Donald Trump secured his victory, there were some other surprising outcomes.
As the New York Times reports, “Seven electors, the most ever, voted for someone other than their party’s nominee.”
And while there had been threats of numerous defectors on the Republican side, Hillary Clinton ended up losing more electors than Trump, reports NPR.
Of the 232 electoral votes she won in the general election, she received 227; of the 5 she lost, 3 cast their votes for Colin Powell, 1 went to Bernie Sanders, and 1 was submitted for Faith Spotted Eagle.
Four of these were from Washington State.
However, NPR points out that three more Electoral College members tried to defect, with an attempted vote for John Kasich and two for Bernie Sanders, but those votes were ultimately steered back to Clinton.
One of these, an elector from Maine named David Bright, reportedly issued a statement explaining, in part, “I cast my vote for Bernie Sanders...to represent thousands of Democratic Maine voters...who came into Maine politics for the first time this year because of Bernie Sanders.”
Meanwhile, Trump lost two votes in Texas, but they were submitted for other Republicans--John Kasich and Ron Paul.
On Monday afternoon, the president-elect commented on his victory by tweeting, “We did it! Thank you to all of my great supporters, we just officially won the election (despite all of the distorted and inaccurate media).”
