7-year-old Syria war symbol, Bana al-Abed, evacuated from Aleppo

Bana Alabed, the young Syrian girl who has become an internationally recognized symbol of civilians’ suffering in her country’s ruthless civil war through a Twitter account, has made it out of eastern Aleppo along with other children evacuated by international aid groups. A picture of smiling Bana Alabed in a woolly hat was tweeted by the president of the Syrian American Medical Society, Ahmad Tarakji. Fears for Bana al-Abed’s safety spiked on Sunday when her Twitter account, run by her mother, Fatemah, was abruptly shut down. Bana's account has chronicled the realities of life in a once-teeming metropolis, by posting pictures of the ongoing destruction, including those of her own rubble-littered street.
