Chris Christie: NJ to forgive loans of dead students

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie signed a bill into law requiring the state's student loan agency to forgive loans of borrowers who die or become permanently disabled. Last year, the New York Times uncovered the state's harsh policies, which required families to repay loans of their loved ones even after they passed. The state loan agency, or the Higher Education Student Assistance Authority, is responsible for nearly $2 billion in outstanding loans. The new law brings the state closer to federal student loans, which are forgiven when students die or become permanently disabled About 70 loans a year would be discharged as a result of death or disability, according to the state's Office of Legislative Services.
