COLUMBUS, OHIO — Nearly a dozen people were left wounded following a knife attack at Ohio State University on Monday morning.

Abdul Razak Ali Artan began his stabbing spree by driving his car onto the sidewalk and running over pedestrians, the Columbus Dispatch reported.

The incident took place near Watts Hall on the university campus.

Artan, an 18-year-old student at the university, then exited the vehicle and began attacking people with a butcher knife, WBNS-10TV reported. He injured 11 people in his attack, including one critically.

Officer Alan Horujko of the Ohio State University police confronted Artan and ordered him to drop his weapon. Artan did not comply, prompting Horujko to open fire and kill him.

According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Artan was a Somalian Muslim refugee with permanent residence status who came to the U.S. in 2014. He graduated cum laude from Columbus State Community College before enrolling at Ohio State.
