San Antonio officer killed inside squad car outside police headquarters

SAN ANTONIO — A Texas police officer was killed inside a squad car parked outside San Antonio police headquarters on Sunday.
Speaking at a news conference, Chief William McManus said Detective Benjamin Marconi was writing a ticket inside a police vehicle right before noon when the suspect’s car pulled up behind him. The suspect, described as a slim black man in his 20s or 30s, reportedly walked up to the driver’s side window and fired at Marconi, before reaching through the open window and opening fire again. Marconi was struck in the head and killed.
The suspect then reportedly walked back to his car, said to be a black Toyota or Nissan sedan with dark windows and chrome rims, and fled the scene through the police headquarters parking lot and from the west side of the building.
McManus compared the incident to to the recent deaths of police officers in Dallas and Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Both of those cases came after police were involved in the shootings of civilians that eventually sparked nationwide protests.
Police are still investigating the motive behind the San Antonio shooting.
Detective Marconi, 50, was a 20-year veteran of the force.
