During his run for the White House, Donald Trump denied having ever communicated with the government of Russia, notes the Washington Post.
The government is now allegedly saying it did engage with his campaign.
On Thursday, Interfax reported that Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Sergei Ryabkov, said, “There were contacts" and noted the conversation with Trump’s people “were on a sufficient, responsible level.”
Ryabkov further commented, “I cannot say that all of them but quite a few have been staying in touch with Russian representatives.”
It was also said such outreach is customary, and that calls were allegedly placed to Hillary Clinton’s camp as well, though those were, “not always productive.”
Trump spokesperson Hope Hicks has rebuffed Ryabkov's claims, telling the Washington Post via email, “The campaign had no contact with Russian officials."
