On Thursday, ThinkProgress reported that the FBI has launched an investigation into its Twitter account @FBIRecordsVault.

The long-idle account sprang to life on October 30, posting a link to an archive in which Fred Trump, father of Donald Trump, is called a ‘philanthropist.’

Days later, it offered direct access to a report concerning the pardon of MarC Rich, a controversial act performed by President Bill Clinton.

The FBI has since denied that anything unusual is happening, saying, “Per the standard procedure for [the Freedom of Information Act], these materials became available for release and were posted automatically and electronically to the FBI's public reading room in accordance with the law and established procedures."

Thus, news of an internal investigation comes as a surprise – and perhaps a relief - to many.

The bureau has been under scrutiny as of late, with some making accusation of Hatch Act violations.

The act prohibits the department and its employees from engaging in any behavior that may influence election results.
