Over the past week while Americans were largely focused on elections and historic moments in baseball, the people of Russia have reportedly been engaged in a decidedly different sort of activity.
According to the Wall Street Journal, 40 million individuals participated in civil defense drills to ensure their readiness for attack via nuclear or chemical weapons.
Gas masks were reportedly tried on, hazmat suits worn, and emergency response scenarios rehearsed.
Footage of the exercises appeared on multiple television stations.
While relations between the U.S. and Russia have certainly chilled as of late, some question how much that has to do with the drills.
It has been suggested the preparedness training is likely either posturing or related to Russia’s military budget, which is up for consideration.
On the matter, Pavel Felgenhauer, a military analyst located in Moscow said to ABC News, “The more tension the better for the Russian General Staff. Tensions are going to rise and rise and rise. The good news is no one really wants a war. But it’s going to be a good show."
