Several displaced families arrived at an Iraqi army checkpoint in Qayara on Sunday after hunger forced them to leave their villages south of Mosul. The families drove or walked through an apocalyptic landscape turned dark grey with the smoke of burning oil wells and a sulphur factory that released toxic fumes into the air. Many families arrived without men, saying they were too scared to come.
