Trump and Clinton trade jokes and insults at charity dinner

A day after their third and final presidential debate, rivals Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump have poked fun at each other at a charity dinner in New York.

Reflecting the acrimony that has marked the 2016 race for the White House, Republican nominee Trump labeled Clinton ‘‘corrupt’‘ and joked about the FBI investigation into her private email.

“I wasn’t really sure if Hillary was going to be here tonight, because I guess, you didn’t send her invitation by email,’‘ Trump said.

But despite drawing some of the biggest laughs Trump appeared to lose the room after going one step too far with his caustic jabs.

‘‘Hillary believes that it’s vital to deceive the people by having one public policy and a totally different policy in private,’‘ declared the Republican nominee.

For her part, Clinton alluded to Trump’s statements about women and how he might estimate the Statue of Liberty’s attractiveness.

“Donald looks at the Statue of Liberty and sees a four.
Maybe a five if she loses the torch and tablet and changes her hair,” joked Clinton.

Finally the two candidates ended the exchange with a handshake. The annual Alfred E Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner is likely to be the last time the two presidential candidates – who were just a seat apart – share a stage together before election day.
