A man is suspected of dying 800 years ago after getting hit with a boomerang, a new study has concluded.

The research centers around skeletal remains found in Australia in 2014. The skull was found, as a recent report by the New York Times notes, with “…a gash across the…right eye that stretched to the jaw.

Scientists initially thought the wound had been made by a bladed weapon like a sword until his death was dated to the 13th century, hundreds of years before such metal implements were first introduced in the region.

So the team focused on locally available weapons at the time which could have created the six-inch-long gash.

After examining the evidence, they concluded in the study that the culprit may have been an attack boomerang called Wonna or “...wooden weapons known as ‘Lil-lils.’”

Based on the injuries reflected by the skeleton, researchers believe the man--since named Kaakutja--was struck in the face, ribs, and arm during an ambush.

His remains are thought to provide rare insight into fighting among the area’s native peoples.
