Donald Trump’s poll numbers have been plummeting, and, over the weekend, he insisted in a series of tweets that his decline in popularity is due to the election being ‘rigged.’
In the early hours of Saturday, the Republican presidential candidate wrote, “This election is being rigged by the media pushing false and unsubstantiated charges, and outright lies, in order to elect Crooked Hillary!”
Not long after, he suggested some polling places were complicit in the scheme to derail his campaign as well.
Prominent GOP members quickly moved in to smooth over the situation.
Mike Pence stated on Sunday’s 'Meet the Press' that “as Donald Trump said in that first debate, and I will say to you today, we will accept the will of the American people.”
House Speaker Paul Ryan’s office also issued a statement, saying, “Our democracy relies on confidence in election results, and the speaker is fully confident the states will carry out this election with integrity.”
Regardless, Trump continued his allegations on Monday, posting to Twitter, “Of course there is large scale voter fraud happening on and before election day. Why do Republican leaders deny what is going on? So naive!”
