Black Friday is typically considered the year’s biggest shopping day, but a retail tracking firm is predicting that it will likely lose its top position this year in both sales and traffic.
A press release by California-based RetailNext states that, in 2016, “The biggest shopping day in terms of sales is expected to be Friday, December 23, while the busiest shopping day in terms of store traffic is expected to be Super Saturday, December 17.”
According to RetailNext's vice president of retail consulting, Shelley Kohan, part of the reason for the decline of Black Friday is that more stores are open on Thanksgiving Day which has reduced the need to shop the day after.
She also suggests that results will ultimately be stronger for “those retailers who reimagine and reinvent Thanksgiving weekend shopping as more of a month-long event.”
In 2015, Black Friday sales totaled around $10.2 billion, a 12 percent decline from the prior year.
