Prominent Republican Newt Gingrich has commented that the current presidential election is getting rigged and that citizens should monitor other voters at polling locations.
The former Speaker of the House was a guest on ABC News show 'This Week' when host Martha Raddatz asked him about similar claims made by Donald Trump and other party members.
Gingrich responded by saying, “This is not about election officials at the precinct level. This is about last Friday when the networks spent 23 minutes on the Trump tape and less than one minute...on Hillary Clinton’s secret speeches that were being revealed on WikiLeaks.”
He also stated to Raddatz, “I think that without the unending one-sided assault on news media, Trump would be beating Hillary by 15 points.”
When Raddatz brought up Trump’s call for citizens to monitor polling places, Gingrich said, “They should.”
He later explained, “There are clearly cases where you clearly have intimidation, there are cases where you clearly have theft...there’s a guy in California who was voting 24 years after he died.”
Countering such claims by some Republicans, a spokesperson for House Speaker Paul Ryan issued a statement on Saturday, saying, “Our democracy relies on confidence in election results, and the speaker is fully confident the states will carry out this election with integrity.”
