New York Times Invites Donald Trump To Sue Over Article In An Epic Letter

Lawyers for Donald Trump demanded the retraction of a New York Times article featuring two women who say the GOP candidate touched them inappropriately. The Times has since made it clear that is not going to happen.

On Wednesday evening, the New York Times published an article entitled, “Two Women Say Donald Trump Touched Them Inappropriately,” the content of which was exactly as indicated.

Lawyers for Trump soon after declared the report as ‘libel per se,’ and demanded both a retraction and an apology, but, on Thursday, the Times made it clear neither is going to happen.

In a letter of response, David McCraw, the publication’s Assistant General Counsel, writes, “We did what the law allows: We published newsworthy information about a subject of deep public concern. If Mr. Trump disagrees, if he believes that American citizens had no right to hear what these women had to say and that the law of this country forces us and those who would dare to criticize him to stand silent or be punished, we welcome the opportunity to have a court set him straight.”

Of the libel accusation, McCraw notes, “The essence of a libel claim, of course, is the protection of one’s reputation…Nothing in our article has had the slightest effect on the reputation that Mr. Trump…has already created for himself.”
