Gunmen slaughter Shiite pilgrims in the Sakhi Shrine in Kabul

Three gunmen dressed in military or police uniforms have opened fire on Shiite worshipers at the Sakhi Shrine in Kabul.

Authorities say at least 18 people have been killed and more than 40 wounded during the assault.

It is reported that the attack began with an explosion before the assailants opened fire.

Qalandar Shah witnessed the attack: “When the attackers entered the shrine, they opened fire. My friend Palawan Sami was eating. I saw wounded victims and I evacuated a child – a girl – and a woman. I evacuated at least three victims.”

Officials have warned Shiites about the possibility of violence as the community celebrates Ashura Day, which sees Shiite men ritually flagellate themselves in the streets.

The Taliban see Shiites as heretics.
