Samsung scraps its flagship Galaxy Note 7 because it’s so damn hot

SEOUL — Samsung has decided to pull the plug on its Galaxy Note 7 less than two months after its release after failing to solve its battery problem.

Samsung announced a massive recall of 2.5 million Note 7s at the beginning of September after numerous reports of phones overheating, burning and even exploding, Reuters reported.

On Tuesday, the tech giant decided to scrap all production of the Note 7, in what could be one of the costliest product safety blunders in tech history, according to Reuters.

During the Galaxy Note 7’s extremely short lifespan, the company received more than 100 reports of devices catching fire, according to Slate.

The decision to kill production came on the heels of fresh reports of replacement devices catching on fire, which prompted regulators, phone carriers and airlines to issue new warnings, according to Reuters.

Last week, a Southwest Airlines flight had to be evacuated after one of the replacement handsets began smoking.

Samsung is now advising anyone with a Note 7 to shut it off immediately and take it back to the store for an exchange or refund.

Analysts said the death of the Note 7 could cost the company up to $17 billion. Samsung stock took a beating on Tuesday as shares closed down 8 percent, wiping nearly $20 billion of its market value.
