In an op-ed published by CNN on Tuesday, President Obama lays out how the U.S. will accomplish the feat of sending humans to Mars by the 2030s.

President Obama, like many, is captivated by space exploration and, in particular, by the idea of sending humans to Mars in the not so distant future.
In an op-ed published by CNN on Tuesday, he lays out how the U.S. is working to accomplish the feat by the 2030s.
Obama writes, “Getting to Mars will require continued cooperation between government and private innovators, and we're already well on our way,” and notes, “More than 1,000 companies across nearly all 50 states are working on private space initiatives.”
In regards to the upcoming initiatives, the president says, “The next step is to reach beyond the bounds of Earth's orbit. I'm excited to announce that we are working with our commercial partners to build new habitats that can sustain and transport astronauts on long-duration missions in deep space. These missions will teach us how humans can live far from Earth -- something we'll need for the long journey to Mars.”
Obama also expounds upon how the endeavor will enrich the lives of all, stating, “If we make our leadership in space even stronger in this century than it was in the last, we won't just benefit from related advances in energy, medicine, agriculture and artificial intelligence, we'll benefit from a better understanding of our environment and ourselves.”
