On Tuesday, Reuters revealed that Yahoo complied with a government intelligence order to conduct searches of customer emails in real time and, in 2015, built software for that purpose.
Citing three sources familiar with the secret initiative, including two who worked for the company, the news agency says the number of Yahoo Mail accounts scanned runs in the hundreds of millions.
At this time, it is not known whether the FBI or National Security Agency initiated the demand, what the target characters or phrases were, or how much, if any, information was handed over.
Sources did say that the directive specifically applied to arriving emails and attachments.
According to Reuters, CEO Marissa Mayer did not appear to put a great deal of effort into challenging the order, though sources suggested that fighting it may not have seemed like an endeavor that would have ended successfully.
