During a Monday debate between New Hampshire candidates for the U.S. Senate, Sen. Kelly Ayotte identified Donald Trump as a role model, only to take the glowing endorsement back in the hours that followed.
The Washington Post reports that the support, albeit temporary, came in response to a question concerning whether or not she believes the GOP presidential candidate is a positive influence for children.
Ayotte, a Republican who has not officially endorsed Trump, responded, “I think that certainly there are many role models that we have, and I believe that he can serve as president, so absolutely…”
She later issued the statement, “I misspoke tonight. While I would hope all of our children would aspire to be president, neither Donald Trump nor Hillary Clinton have set a good example, and I wouldn’t hold up either of them as role models for my kids.”
