Historically, HIV has proven difficult to fight as it has the ability to hide in dormant cells, shielding it from the body’s immune system.
The treatment created by the researchers involves the administering of antiretroviral medication, a vaccine, and Vorinostat, which renders inert cells active and exposes the concealed virus.
Once the body detects its presence, the immune system can work towards eradication.
While HIV was not detected in the patient, it could simply be due to the antiretroviral drugs.
Testing is scheduled to continue for another 5 years.
