More than 70 people were injured in a gas explosion on Saturday near the southern Spanish tourist hot-spot of Malaga.

The blast happened at about 1700 GMT in the small “La Bohemia” restaurant in the town of Velez Malaga during a festival.

Spanish media says a chef raised the alarm just before the blast, believed to have involved a gas cylinder.

The local mayor is quoted as saying a gas leak is thought to have built up in a closed room – triggering a fire and then the blast.

Most of the wounded suffered cuts and bruises but at least five people were seriously hurt.
