iPhone 7 makes a weird hissing noise like a snake, owners complain

CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA — Disgruntled Apple iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus users are complaining that a low hissing sound emanates from the back of their phones when the devices are pushed to their processing limits.

There is a consensus online that the noise could be “coil whine”, caused when the phone’s powerful A10 processor comes under a heavy workload, the Verge reports.

Coil whine occurs when an electromagnetic coil physically vibrates due to the strength of the electric current passing through it. The noise can be dampened, for example with a drop of glue, but the dampener can deteriorate over time, according to tech website Ars Technica.

Coil whine can occur in any electric circuit and is quite common in personal computers. It has not been much of an issue for smartphones until now however, probably because the processors in the devices previously weren’t big enough.

Not all iPhone 7 users are experiencing the problem and so far Apple has declined to comment, the Verge reported.

iPhone 7 owners with the hissing problem report that Apple has been willing to replace defective devices. However, a lack of stock means customers must wait around five to seven days for a replacement phone.
