Quetta, Pakistan, is a known hub of Taliban activity, and U.S. officials often screen those returning from the area for signs of radicalization.
Ahmad Khan Rahami, the suspect in the New York and New Jersey bombings, is among them, having spent time in the city, reports ABC News.
He first traveled to Quetta in 2011, then again departed for Pakistan and Afghanistan in April of 2013, returning about a year later. According to officials, he visited Quetta during the latter trip as well.
He was reportedly questioned upon both returns to the U.S., but his responses to the questions asked did not raise concerns, notes the Boston Herald.
Massachusetts Democratic Rep. Stephen Lynch recently said of the matter, “If someone, particularly a U.S. citizen, goes back and forth to Quetta, I think that would raise a bit of a red flag for me.”
