Gregory Peck & Audrey Hepburn star together in the classic movie Roman Holiday in which Princess Anne (Hepburn) is fulfilling her royal duties in Rome. While she is surrounded by people who look after her she leads a life of solitude & dreams of being able to do the simple things like attend a small outdoor dance venue which she can see from her window. She decides to escape her royal existence to have some fun in the outside world & meets an American news corespondent (Peck) late at night with nowhere to stay. Pecks character is cautious thinking she may be a hustler though takes pity on her & reluctantly lets her stay at his place. In the morning he secretly discovers her identity & offers to show her around Rome in order to get maybe the biggest scoop of his career. They gradually develop a fondness & respect for each other throughout their time together until reality catches up with them, fittingly after she has experienced dancing at the outdoor dance venue she had seen from her window. The princess & newsman avoid being detained by the security men, though the Princess realises she should return to fulfil her duties & does so. The final part of the story has to do with honour & chivalry. The newsmans character (Peck) is hinted to be maybe a little dubious throughout. Surprisingly he foregoes the huge story somewhat like a Knight in shining armour knowing it will embarass the Princess & her family. He secretly hands her photos that were covertly taken of the fun they have had in Rome at the royal/formal press conference in which he attends as a member of the press.
This is a classic film that is timeless & staring two of the great actors of all time. 10/10
Facts & Trivia: Interestingly Audrey was fluent in English, Dutch,German, French, Spanish & Italian. Roman Holiday was the first staring role for Audrey Hepburn in which she also won an oscar for best actress. Originally the film title was meant to have Gregory Pecks name larger than Hepburns though he insisted that the names be equal in size citing that "This girl is going to be a huge star & I will look like a massive jerk". The scene where Peck pretends his hand has been bitten off after sicking it into the mouth of the stone face was ad libbed by Peck & Audreys reaction was apparently genuine as she didnt know it was going to happen. Peck & Hepburn became lifelong friends. Both made significant contributions to society for which both were awarded the presidential medal of freedom. Hepburn devoted the later years of her life to impoverished & disadvantaged children like the Ethiopian famine of 1988 in which she was a goodwill ambassador for unicef.
