The United States agreed Wednesday to send a record $3.8 billion in new military aid to Israel over the next decade.
"It's an important message to the region that nobody should misread the differences between the US and Israel when it comes to Iran or policy differences when it comes to the Palestinians," said David Makovsky, director of the Project on the Middle East Peace Process at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy.
The $38 billion agreement, the largest bilateral military aid package ever, is "a reminder of the United States' commitment to Israel" that includes $5 billion for missile defense, additional F-35 joint strike fighters and increased mobility for its ground forces, said Susan Rice, President Obama's National Security Adviser, at a signing ceremony at the State Department.
