WASHINGTON — The United States Federal Aviation Administration’s rules for the commercial use of drones officially took effect on August 29. Here are the key things to know.
To fly commercial drones, one must be at least 16 years old, possess a remote pilot airman certificate, and must pass TSA vetting.
Drones weighing between half a pound and 55 pounds may be registered online. Drones heavier than 55 pounds require special registration.
Drones may not fly higher than 400 feet, and only during daylight hours.
They also may not fly faster than 100 miles per hour, must be keep within the operator’s visual range at all times, are prohibited from flying over people, and may not be operated from a moving vehicle. Drones must also yield to manned aircraft.
NASA expects commercially flown drones will account for around 40 percent of all small drones in operation by 2019, tech site ZDNet reports.
