John Legend Says ‘Star Spangled Banner’ Is ‘Weak Song'

Entertainer John Legend came to Colin Kaepernick’s defense on Monday, noting via Twitter that the ‘Star Spangled Banner’ is ‘weak’ and pointing out there are other options.
On Friday, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick caused a stir when he declined to stand for the pregame playing of the national anthem on the grounds of racial injustice in the U.S.
Entertainer John Legend came to the athlete’s defense on Monday, noting via Twitter that the ‘Star Spangled Banner’ is ‘weak’ and pointing out there are other options.
He specifically suggested ‘America the Beautiful.’
Legend also shared a link to an article that points out the lesser-known anthem verse:
“No refuge could save the hireling and slaveFrom the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave…”
In a separate tweet, John Legend raised the question, “For those defending the current anthem, do you really truly love that song?”
