On Thursday, Vice President Joe Biden said he anticipates the closure of Guantánamo Bay prison will occur before the end of President Obama’s last term, reports the New York Daily News.
The prediction was made during a press conference held in Sweden.
Closing the controversial detention center has been a goal of the president since he took office roughly seven-and-a-half years ago, notes the Daily Mail.
Earlier this month, the largest transfer of prisoners in the facility’s history took place, as 15 inmates were moved to the United Arab Emirates.
At present, the population at the prison is down to 61 detainees, according to The Hill.
President Obama will leave the office in January.
