Young waitress received racist message instead of a tip in Virginia restaurant - TomoNews

HARRISONBURG, VIRGINIA — An 18-year-old waitress got a little surprise at work when she looked at the receipt a couple left for her one day.

Instead of a standard 15 percent tip, someone wrote the words “we only tip citizens” on the check.

The waitress, Sadie Karina Elledge, is an American-born citizen of Honduran and Mexican descent. She was working at neighborhood Greek restaurant, Jess’ Lunch, when she served the pair.

Her grandfather, John Elledge, posted a photo of the receipt on his Facebook, where it went viral. He wrote, “Ada M. Doriot. You are a complete and total piece of dung.”

John tried to track down the couple and went to his granddaughter’s manager, who threw his support behind Sadie.

“We have and always will stand behind our decisions we believe all people should treated equally, we have no animosity toward our fellow man we treat everybody with the same respect no matter where they’re from,” the restaurant posted on its Facebook page. “... The decision we made was easy the restaurant will continue to support its staff in in situations of this nature …”

Due to tremendous media coverage, the couple returned to the restaurant to complain. John was tipped off about their presence and rushed over.

“She was asking me why I posted it,” he told The Washington Post. “I said, ‘obviously, it was an insult — your signature against my granddaughter — darn right I'm going to post it. And no apologies.’”
