Celebrations as NLD claim election victory

A feeling of elation has swept Rangoon as people celebrate Aung San Suu Kyi's momentous victory in Sunday's by-election.
The iconic opposition leader has won the vote in her constituency, according to her party, the National League for Democracy, or NLD

Although official results are yet to be released, initial estimates look positive for Burma's main opposition party who claim to have won all 44 seats they contested and the landmark win is already being celebrated across the country.

However throughout the election day itself claims of fraud, intimidation and voters being tricked into ruining ballots still surfaced.

But Suu Kyi says the NLD will not ignore these claims even though they have won their seats.

"We will tout all of the irregularities that took place, not in any spirit of vengeance or anger. But of course, we do not think that these should be overlooked. We do not think that such practices should be encouraged in any way and so, it is only with the intention of making sure that things improve in future."

But despite claims of foul play international observers have responded positively to the vote and it now remains to be seen whether the election results will lead to the lifting of sanctions imposed on the country over the past two decades.
