Stunning images are emerging from an aurora that occurred on the evening of August 2. Some of them, taken by the Suomi NPP satellite, show an almost ghostly layer of light extending over Canada and parts of the northern U.S.

Bob King, a space enthusiast, reports on his blog Astro Bob that he began seeing signs of the aurora just after midnight. 
He writes that “the pace was slow, but the reach of the arcs and rays [were] impressive — all the way from far northwest to northeast.”
 According to Mashable, "auroras are produced when particles from the sun stream toward Earth and impact the planet's magnetic field."
