Study Warns That Bounce House Interiors May Pose Heightened Heat Risks

Bounce houses are no doubt a lot of fun, but according to a new University of Georgia study, they may also pose heat-related risks for children.
Inspired by recent findings concerning microclimates and their formations in enclosed spaces, the researchers took a deeper look into what sorts of moisture and temperature changes occur inside the recreational inflatables.
On a warm summer day, they took temperatures both inside and outside of a bounce house set up on campus.
Over a five-hour period of measurements, the team discovered that readings gathered from the interior ranged from roughly 4 to 7 degrees higher than those taken outdoors.
Andrew Grundstein, co-author of the study, said, “Heat illnesses like heat stroke can be deadly and occur in children participating in sports, left alone in parked cars, and as our study shows, potentially when playing in bounce houses."
