Researchers Reveal A Method To Use When Choking Alone

A recently published study out of Canada recommends that people who are alone and choking try a head-down approach which has been shown to allow gravity to help dislodge the obstruction.

People who are alone should try a head-down (inversed) position when choking, recommends a recently published study.
The technique involves inverting the head and upper body by going into a downward dog position or by hanging upside down off the front of a chair.
Artur Luczak with the University of Lethbridge explains in his paper that this method has been shown to enable gravity to help get the lodged food out.
According to the study, it “could help remove saliva and other fluids which may further obstruct airflow during choking.”
However, the paper does warn that "considering scarcity of data, the safest option could be to apply the inversed position as the last option if all other maneuvers fail."
The study reports that about 30 to 40 percent of choking cases involve people who are alone.
