Florida Reveals First Likely Mosquito-Borne Cases Of Zika In U.S.

Florida Governor Rick Scott has announced in a Friday press conference that four cases of the Zika virus appear to have been contracted in the state from infected mosquitoes.

Mosquitoes are reportedly infecting people with the Zika virus in certain areas of Florida, notes the Washington Post.
As such, it is believed to be the first U.S. state where there may be local transmissions of the disease.
During a Friday press conference, Gov. Rick Scott stated, “We learned today that four people in our state likely have the Zika virus as a result of a mosquito bite. All four of these people live in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties and the Florida Department of Health believes that active transmissions of this virus could be occurring in one small area in Miami.”
CNBC is reporting that while three men and one woman have been diagnosed, Scott confirmed that no mosquitoes have tested positive for the virus.
He went on to urge local women to take precautions if they are or expect to become pregnant and asked “...every Floridian to take proper precautions by eliminating any standing water and wearing insect repellent.”
