New York City is on track to be home to the first underground park in the world, notes Lonely Planet.
The project, called The Lowline, recently received approval from city officials, an important step towards transforming an abandoned underground train terminal on the Lower East Side into a vegetation-filled respite.
At this time, the plan is to grow plants throughout the roughly 1-acre space and provide the needed sunlight by funneling it in from the outside via mirrors and fiber optic cables.
Those wanting to see how the system will work can visit Lowline Lab, a park prototype, through March 2017.
Now that the project has been approved by the officials, the next big challenge for the developers is to raise $10 million in 12 months.
