Adnan Syed granted new trial in ‘Serial’ case after 16 years in prison

Adnan Syed, whose murder conviction became the subject of the popular podcast “Serial,” has been granted a new trial.
Syed has been battling for 16 years to overturn his life sentence for the murder of 18-year-old Hae Min Lee in 1999 and was seen for the first time earlier this year at an appeal trial.
His defence attorney announced on Twitter that they had been successful in securing a new trial for the now 35-year-old.
Syed's defence argued that he deserves a new trial because his lawyer during the 2000 trial, Cristina Gutierrez, was ineffective.
