Brexit fallout: UK citizens seeking Irish passports in bid to main their EU citizenship - TomoNews

DUBLIN — Ireland has received thousands of passport queries from British citizens seeking information on how to obtain an Irish passport, Reuters reported, citing the Irish Foreign Office.

Many Britons are looking for various ways to maintain their European Union citizenship following the country’s vote last week to exit the EU. One way they can do so — provided they meet the requirements — is by applying for an Irish passport.

According to Reuters, the Irish embassy in London received 4,000 inquiries regarding passports following the referendum result. On a typical day it receives around 200. Elsewhere, UK-run Post Offices in Northern Ireland also ran out of passport applications.

According to the Irish Naturalization and Immigration Service, passport applications normally cost 175 Euros, or around $190. If all those applications are processed, it could net the Irish government around 700,000 Euros, around $775,000.

Anyone born in Ireland or Northern Ireland can obtain an Irish passport, Reuters reported. People with an Irish parent or grandparent can also obtain an Irish passport.

According to Reuters, the number of people living in the UK entitled to an Irish passport amounts to around six million.
