LAS VEGAS — A British man was arrested at a Donald Trump rally in Las Vegas last weekend after he tried to disarm a police officer and then use the gun to kill the Republican presidential candidate, CNN reported, citing a criminal complaint.

According to a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police news release, 19-year-old suspect Michael Sandford tried to strike a conversation with a police officer at a rally on Saturday on the pretense he was an after an autograph. While they were talking, Sandford tried to take the officer’s weapon, police said. Custody of Sandford was transferred to the U.S. Secret Service.

Sandford allegedly told a Secret Service agent that he wanted “to kill Trump”, reported the Las Vegas Review-Journal, citing a criminal complaint. Sandford reportedly said he thought the easiest way to shoot Trump would be by taking the officer’s weapon.

The teen allegedly told the Secret Service he’d been planning on killing Trump for one year, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported citing a criminal complaint. Sandford also allegedly said he had practised shooting at a Las Vegas gun range before going to the rally.

Sandford — who reportedly suffers from a form of Autism — was also discovered to have an expired U.S. visa. A U.S. Magistrate found him a danger to the public and a flight risk at a court hearing on Monday, reported the Las Vegas Review-Journal. He was denied bail and further charges are pending.
