Basking shark comes within metres of school paddling trip

Footage has emerged of a large basking shark swimming close to a group of kayaking schoolchildren.

The video, captured at Cape Clear, Ireland on Saturday, shows the shark passing within just a couple of metres of the students.

"Lots of basking sharks have been coming to West Cork," the filmer wrote online.

"This group of school kids got really lucky when one of the 9 sharks in South Harbour swam right through the middle of them."

According to theshark.dk - a reference website on sharks - basking sharks feed on plankton, and as such pose no threat to humans.
