Police ‘Deeply Sorry’ For Destroying Woman’s Last Letters To Parents

The Chicago Police Department has apologized for accidentally destroying the last letters 29-year-old Nicole Porter wrote to her parents before committing suicide last year.

A family is heartbroken after finding out the Chicago Police Department accidentally destroyed their daughter’s final letters to her parents, notes the Washington Post.

WBBM is reporting that 29-year-old Nicole Porter committed suicide on February 27, 2015, with a fatal amount of insulin.
According to her mother, Nicole did not have diabetes but “was struggling a little bit with depression.”
Before she died, the deceased woman wrote her parents two letters; one of them began with the words, “Dear Mom and Dad, I love you guys so much.”
The young woman then went on to apologize to them and take full responsibility for her actions.
The notes were taken by the police as evidence, and though the Porters received emailed copies, the family was told the actual letters would be returned after the case was closed.
However, when the parents went to retrieve the documents last month, they found out their daughter’s last words to them had been destroyed.
Terry Porter, Nicole's mother, told WBBM, “It was like everything was ripped right open again.”
A spokesman for the Chicago police attributes the mistake to a clerical error and said they are “deeply sorry.”
The police department has since reportedly instituted a safeguard to prevent similar mistakes in the future.
