Astonishing amount of insects 'turn snow black'

Footage of an astonishing amount of snow fleas turning the snow black in Tula Oblast, Russia.

The video, filmed on February 7, shows the tiny insects gathered together, covering the surface of the snow so that it turns completely black.

According to the filmer, "springtails are actually quite common and abundant, but they're so tiny they tend to blend in and go unnoticed.

"Remarkably, snow fleas don't freeze in the winter thanks to a special kind of protein in their bodies."

"They may be disgusting but are no risk for humans and are just having fun in the snow," he continued.
