A team of Europe-based researchers has investigated this question and concluded in a paper that the trees they studied have what appear to be an equivalent nighttime routine. 
For the experiment, they took numerous scans from two silver birch trees--one in Austria and the other in Finland--during the hours between sunset and sunrise; all outside conditions were similar including a lack of wind.
