Engineer collects $7.25m payout after falling through Rodin Museum glass floor

PHILADELPHIA — Phani Guthula has endured a lot of pain since his near-fatal accident in Philadelphia's Rodin Museum a few years ago. Now, his lawyers have managed to negotiate a sizeable settlement to cushion his nasty fall.

On November 26, 2012, Guthula was conducting an energy audit of the building as an engineer for ICF International. The Rodin had just undergone major renovations at the time. A security guard allowed him access to a glass-paneled floor section of the museum to inspect the light fixtures in the attic area. But as he was doing so, the floor gave way, and the 27-year-old found himself falling 38 feet down to the ground.

As can be seen in a museum surveillance video of the incident, Guthula very nearly lands on top of a sculpture. The fall left Guthula with fractures to his femur, hip, pelvis, rib, and elbow, as well other traumatic injuries. He was hospitalized for 45 days and still has difficulty walking.

On May 10, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and AlliedBarton Security Services reached a $7.25 million dollar settlement with Guthula's attorneys as a result of the accident.
