Forty students fight during lunch at Los Angeles high school, 12 injured

SYLMAR, CALIFORNIA — A massive fight broke out at a Los Angeles high school, Monday, May 10, involving at least 40 students, and was caught on camera.

The lunch time brawl at Sylmar High School, part of the Los Angeles Unified School District, left 12 students injured.

Video of the incident, which lasted about 20 minutes, showed dozens of students punching and kicking each other while others ran in pandemonium. An armed officer, with his gun still in its holster, could be seen attempting to break up one of the fights.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fight, but one student has come forward speaking of an incident that occurred over the weekend after prom. The student told KTLA 5 that following the annual dance, a student was hit in the head with a bottle at an after-prom party.

"Some kid at the prom got beat up for some reason and I guess he wanted revenge," the student said.

Other students have said the fight may have been racially motivated, while others deny that claim.

The injured students suffered minor cuts and bruises. No one was taken to the hospital.

"As the head of the most diverse school district in the nation, let me be very clear: We will not tolerate targeting or violence of any kind on our campuses," LAUSD Superintendent Michelle King said in a statement. "Appropriate disciplinary action is being taken."
