Solar-powered computer aims to supply clean water, electricity and internet to millions

ACCRA, GHANA — The developers of a solar-powered computer hope it can change the lives of millions in developing countries.

Marco Attisani, founder of the company behind the Watly computer, said the machine's Italian and Spanish creators aim to provide clean water, electricity and connectivity, CNN reported.

Trials have already taken place in sub-Saharan Africa, where millions live without electricity and clean water. A prototype Watly machine has been tested in rural Ghana, and developers plan more trials in Nigeria and Sudan, according to CNN.

The final design of the 40-meter high, 15-ton Watly machine will be presented to investors and customers in July, according to CNN.

The machine harnesses the energy of the sun through photovoltaic solar panels, which power a 140 kilowatt-hour internal battery. The battery then provides energy for a graphene-based water treatment system, developed by Watly, CNN reported.

The Watly can supply 5,000 liters of safe drinking water per day, and can provide wireless internet connectivity within a radius of 800 meters, according to CNN. Electricity created by the battery can also be used to charge electronic devices.

The number of those living without electricity stands at around 625 million in sub-Saharan Africa, where more than 300 million people lack access to clean drinking water, according to the United Nations.

Watly's founder Attisani said the machine will have a lifespan of 15 years, according to CNN.

Its creators hope it can have a huge social and economic impact, especially in Africa, by bringing clean water and energy to millions of the world's poorest people.
