Jug Created By High School Student Mistakenly Valued At $50,000 On Antiques Roadshow

On Antiques Roadshow, it’s typically the people having objects appraised that get the biggest surprises, but not long ago, an artist ended up in shock as well.

On Antiques Roadshow, it’s typically the people having objects appraised that get the biggest surprises, but, not long ago, an artist ended up in shock as well. 

In January, Alvin Barr of Spokane presented an abstracted, multi-faced jug he’d bought at a yard sale for $300 and was told the value of the piece could be in the $50,000 range.

Much of the estimate was based on the pottery’s creation date, which appraiser Stephen L. Fletcher believed to be in the 19th or 20th century. 

It turns out the object was made in the 1970s. The artist, Betsy Soule, was in high school at the time. 

In light of that information, Antiques Roadshow adjusted its estimate to roughly $5,000.
